Founded in 1837, with the six-prong Tiffany Setting arriving in 1886 and becoming the template every other solitaire has been measured against since. The blue box does a great deal of work, and there is no point pretending otherwise: part of what you pay for here is recognition.

But two claims on their site are genuinely unusual and worth more than the branding. The first is that they accept only 0.04 per cent of the world’s gem-grade diamonds. The second is that they are the only jeweller offering a triple excellent cut on all round brilliant engagement diamonds.

The traceability programme is stronger still. Since 2020 they have disclosed the countries where every newly sourced registered diamond of 0.18 carats and above was sourced, cut, polished, graded and set. They own workshops in Antwerp, Botswana, Mauritius, Vietnam and Cambodia, and publish living-wage commitments. If provenance matters to you, this and De Beers are the two serious answers.

Published starting prices are £1,325 for the Tiffany Setting in 18k yellow gold, £1,575 in platinum, £1,500 for Tiffany Harmony, £2,300 for Tiffany True and £3,875 for the Soleste oval halo.

The Harrods concession keeps department store hours, which are considerably longer than a standalone boutique and include Sundays. That makes it one of the easier places on this site to visit around a working week.

There is no bespoke commission service and no published timescales. This is a collection purchase, and if you want something made to your own design you will need a different jeweller.

This suits someone for whom the recognition is part of the point. That is not a criticism: if your partner has pictured a Tiffany box since she was small, no argument about better value elsewhere is going to improve the moment.

It also suits a buyer who wants serious traceability with a genuinely low entry price. £1,325 for the Tiffany Setting in gold is far more accessible than the reputation suggests, and the cut standard is real.

It will not suit you if you want bespoke, if you want the largest stone your budget allows, or if you would rather nobody could identify the brand. You are paying a premium for the name, and whether that is worth it depends entirely on who is wearing it.
