Michelle Oh was born in Jakarta, trained in jewellery design at Central Saint Martins, and founded the studio in 2011. The work is built around natural gemstones in interesting shapes and cuts, particularly diamonds and sapphires, and is aimed squarely at people who do not want a conventional solitaire.

The commercially unusual thing is the transparency. Bespoke engagement rings start from £3,000 and other bespoke work from £2,000, both published. More significantly, the design brief comes with a total quote that is then locked, with no hidden charges added later. Anyone who has been through an open-ended bespoke process will recognise why that matters.

Ethics are a genuine plank rather than a paragraph. Recycled gold and platinum throughout, registered membership of the Fairtrade Goldsmiths scheme, and conflict-free stones from vetted suppliers buying direct to source.

It runs in three stages. A free initial consultation, in the showroom or remotely by call or WhatsApp, covering budget and ideas. Then a design brief with a total fixed quote, a 50 per cent deposit, and one to two weeks for stone sourcing and 3D renders with revisions taking a day or two each. Then production, which is seven working weeks.

Overall they tell you to expect a minimum of two to three months for the whole process, which is honest and worth taking seriously if you have a date in mind. Everything is made in the UK, and stones can be custom cut.

Off-the-peg pieces start much lower, from £550 for a plain band, with signature rings around £2,250 to £2,850. It is appointment only, generally weekday afternoons with limited Saturday hours.

Of 137 reviews, 136 are five star and one is a three star. Reading that three star, it describes being happy with the finished ring but not with part of the experience, so even the single blemish is qualified.

The themes point almost entirely at the design process itself: 42 reviewers describe the bespoke experience specifically, which is a very high proportion for a studio this size and consistent with a business where the designer runs the consultation. Fourteen mention their partner loving the ring, and ten each mention patience, knowledge, and the ring exceeding expectations.

The significant caveat is currency. Only three of the 137 reviews are from the past year, against nearly nine years of trading. That does not indicate anything wrong, and a small studio taking on a limited number of commissions will naturally generate fewer reviews than a showroom, but it does mean this record reflects the past decade more than the present one. They reply to 38 per cent.

This suits someone who actively does not want a conventional ring and would rather have an unusual cut or a coloured stone chosen with a designer’s eye. If your partner’s taste runs to the distinctive, this is one of a small number of London studios genuinely built for that.

It also suits anyone nervous about bespoke costs escalating. The published floor and the fixed quote remove the single most common anxiety about commissioning, and few of her competitors offer either.

It will not suit you if you need a ring quickly. Two to three months is the stated minimum and seven working weeks of that is production alone. Nor will it suit a buyer who wants a classic solitaire, which is not what this studio is for.
